Digestive enzymes are proteins that break down complex nutrients into their subunits which are then absorbed in the intestine. The main digestive enzymes in pets are lipase (for fat), protease (for protein), and amylase (for starch). These enzymes are made in the pancreas and released into the intestine after meals. In the vast majority of animals, these enzymes do exactly what they are intended to do – they digest the food and are critical to nutrient absorption. Another enzyme, cellulase (which is made by bacteria in the gut of animals that eat leaves or hay), can break down a common type of fiber (cellulose) and is not present in the intestine of dogs and cats. However, for unknown reasons, cellulase is often included in plant-based enzyme supplements.
Gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, and gas are common occurrences in dogs and cats and can have many causes ranging from minor to life-threatening. When a pet is frequently afflicted with gastrointestinal issues, pet owners often look for solutions involving diet or dietary supplements.
Two common dietary supplements that are often used in pets with gastrointestinal issues (or as a means to prevent issues) are probiotics and digestive enzymes.
In dogs and cats with pancreatic damage or a specific disease called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), the pancreas is unable to produce enough enzymes. EPI is a disease that causes destruction of the enzyme-producing part of the pancreas.
A note about the benefits of OX Bile:
- Bile Supplements Eliminate Gallstones
Bile supplements may reduce cholesterol gallstones in the gallbladder (cholelithiasis), potentially reducing the need for surgical removal of the gallbladder.
- Help to Remove Toxic Substances from the Body
Toxins that enter in your body via pollution, food, or medications, as well as those that build up in the body after a long time, are usually broken down by the liver. They are then combined with bile salts, secreted into the gut as bile, and removed through the stool.
- Help with Clear Gut Infections
If gut damage in your dog or cat is highly severe and gut immunity low, a leaky gut barrier that allows bacteria to enter into your bloodstream and cause a systemic infection. Bile salts have antimicrobial activity and protect your body against harmful bacteria. Bile acids supplements reduce bacterial overgrowth in your gut and prevent the bacteria and their toxins from entering the bloodstream.
- May Help with Psoriasis (a Skin condition)
Dogs and cats who are affected with psoriasis have detectable levels of endotoxins in the blood, which can cause inflammation. Bile deficiency can be a cause, as due to the low amount of bile it allows endotoxin to enter the blood and reach the skin. By taking ox-bile supplements it can balance the gut microbiome, protect from bacterial gut endotoxins, and reduce inflammation.
- May Improve Liver Diseases
Can be used for a number of diseases including cystic fibrosis (a genetic disease) and chronic liver diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It has been seen that bile acid improved liver function, reduced liver enzymes, and reversed damage in people with cystic fibrosis.
